UN chief denies taking bribes from SK tycoon (Global Times)
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki- moon, who is one of the likely candidates to succeed scandal-hit South Korean President Park Geun-hye, has denied an allegation that he took bribes worth $230,000 from a tycoon in 2000 when he was the country’s foreign minister, straitstimes.com reported on Sunday.
The weekly Sisa Journal claims in a report published on Saturday that Ban allegedly received the kickback from Park Yeon-cha, a businessman who was at the center of the corruption scandal involving close aides to and family members of late President Roh Moo-hyun.
In a press statement released late Saturday, Ban strongly denied the allegations as „completely false and groundless,“ and demanded the magazine to issue an official apology.
Spokesperson Stephane Dujarric, responding on behalf of Ban, said an official letter will be sent to the editor-in-chief of the Sisa Journal to ask for its apology.
Meanwhile a former chief prosecutor who led an investigation into a high-profile lobbying scandal back in the mid-2000 told Yonhap new agency he doesn’t know anything about the allegation.
Citing several anonymous sources close to Park Yeon Cha, the magazine quoted Park as saying that he handed a paper bag carrying $200,000 in cash to Ban at the residence of the foreign minister in Hannam-dong, southern Seoul, in 2005. Ban was the foreign minister at that time.
The magazine also reported, citing a person close to Park, that Park asked the owner of a restaurant in New York to pass on another $30,000 to Ban in early 2007, right after Ban was elected UN secretary-general.

The German political hierarchy and major media remain hostile to any détente with Russia, but the ground may be shifting under the feet of Chancellor Merkel and her allies, reports Gilbert Doctorow.
Just what this means in practice I saw firsthand last Friday when I was in Berlin for an event organized and attended by SPD party officials and supporters. The event was a press briefing at the Bundestag announcing the European launch of Détente Now! (or “Neue Entspannungspolitik Jetzt!” in German) after its U.S. debut with an op-ed in The Nation. The launch on two continents was meant to draw attention to the overarching objective of establishing a new peaceful Atlanticism to replace the neocon-dominated Atlantic Alliance that has developed over the past two decades in a malignant way, bringing us into a New Cold War and, in the estimation of some of us, to the brink of a hot war.
Judged as a “press briefing,” the meeting was a failure. Out of the 20 or so participants, there were just three journalists. One came from Deutsche Welle – not to prepare a report or do interviews but to ask insulting questions, such as why Russian President Vladimir Putin’s signature was not on the appeal to reinstate the policy of rapprochement with Moscow that German Chancellor Willy Brandt had championed nearly a half century ago.

Was dies in der Praxis bedeutet, sah ich erlebte ich persönlich am vergangenen Freitag, als ich in Berlin war um eine Veranstaltung zu besuchen, die organisiert war von SPD Parteifunktionären und Unterstützern. Die Veranstaltung war eine Pressekonferenz am Bundestag zur Ankündigung der europäischen Erklärung Détente Now! (Oder „Neue Entspannungspolitik Jetzt!“) Nach einem U.S.-Debüt mit einem op-ed in der Zeitschrift „The Nation“. Der Start auf zwei Kontinenten sollte die Aufmerksamkeit auf das übergeordnete Ziel lenken, eine neue friedliche Politik über den Atlantik Atlantik hinweg zu schaffen, der die neoklassisch dominierte Atlantische Allianz ersetzen soll, die sich in den letzten zwei Jahrzehnten auf bösartigige Weise entwickelt hat und uns in einen Neuen Kalten Krieg und, nach Einschätzung einiger von uns, bis an den Rand eines heißen Krieges geführt hat.
Als „Pressekonferenz“ beurteilt, war das Treffen ein Misserfolg. Von den 20 Teilnehmern waren nur drei Journalisten zugegen. Einer kam von der Deutschen Welle – aber nicht um einen Bericht vorzubereiten oder um Interviews zu machen, sondern um beleidigende Fragen zu stellen, zum Beispiel, warum die Unterschrift des russischen Präsidenten Wladimir Putin nicht auf dem Appell war, um die Politik der Annäherung an Moskau einzuführen, eine Politik, die der deutsche Bundeskanzler Willy Brandt fast einem halben Jahrhundert begonnen hatte.
