UN withdraws Iran invitation to Syria talks

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has rescinded his invitation to Iran to participate in the forthcoming international conference aimed at achieving a political solution to the Syrian crisis under pressure from the United States.

Speaking at a press briefing at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday, UN spokesman Martin Nesirky said Ban is „deeply disappointed“ at Iran’s statements rejecting the June 2012 Geneva communiqué.

„Given that it has chosen to remain outside that basic understanding, he has decided that the one-day Montreux gathering will proceed without Iran’s participation,“ Nesirky added.

The 2012 Geneva communiqué outlines measures for a transition of power in Syria, and its key demand means Syrian President Bashar al-Assad will have to step down.

On Sunday, the UN chief said Iran has been invited to the Geneva II conference. “As I have said repeatedly, I believe strongly that Iran needs to be part of the solution to the Syrian crisis,” he stated.

But the United States, Britain, Saudi Arabia and the foreign-backed Syrian opposition were strongly opposed to Iran’s participation in the event.

The US said the UN must take back its invitation unless Tehran publicly backs the 2012 roadmap to establish a transitional government in Syria, and the so-called Syrian National Council (SNC) threatened to skip the Geneva II conference entirely.

However, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the upcoming international talks about the Syrian crisis will resemble “hypocrisy” without Iran’s participation.

„Among the countries also invited [to the Geneva conference] are Australia, Mexico, the Republic of Korea, South Africa, Japan, Brazil, India, Indonesia, and many others. So if there is no Iran in this list… I think the peace talks will resemble hypocrisy,“ Lavrov said on Monday.

He emphasized that Iran is among the countries that has a direct interest in the settlement of the Syrian crisis “without any additional damage to the stability of this most important region of the world.“

Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Marzieh Afkham said on Monday that Iran is participating in the conference without accepting any preconditions.

“We accept no precondition for participating in the Geneva II [conference] and, based on the official invitation [we received], Iran will take part in the conference without [any] preconditions,” she stated.

On November 25, 2013, the United Nations set January 22 as the date for the Syria peace conference. The event is scheduled to be held in Switzerland in two parts. On January 22, the opening session of the event will be in the Swiss city of Montreux and then it will be moved to the UN office in Geneva on January 24.

Syria has been gripped by deadly crisis since 2011. According to reports, the Western powers and their regional allies — especially Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and Turkey — are supporting the militants operating inside the country.

According to the United Nations, more than 100,000 people have been killed and millions displaced due to the turmoil that has gripped Syria for nearly three years.

Die Syrien-Krise, die Achse des Widerstands und das politische System Irans

Im Vortrag von Shayan Arkian (Chefredakteur von Irananders) wird die komplexe machtpolitische Entwicklung im Nahen Osten im Kontext der demokratischen Machtergreifung der Muslimbrüder in Tunesien und Ägypten und die darauf folgende Syrien-Krise im Hinblick auf die „Achse des Widerstands“ gegen Israel behandelt. Des Weiteren werden Fragen – wie die nach den Parametern der amerikanischen Nahost-Politik, warum es nie die Intention der US-Politik war, den syrischen Machthaber Bashar Al-Assad zu stürzen, und auf welche Art und Weise die Islamische Republik Iran bemüht war, der US-Strategie der Zermürbung des syrischen Staates entgegenzutreten – erörtert.

In der anschließenden Diskussion geht es um das iranische Staatsmodell selbst. Kann der „arabische Frühling“ Iran erfassen? Lähmen die verschiedenen Machtzentren das Regieren in Iran? Ist die Islamische Republik Iran eine Demokratie? Wie stark ist das Parlament im politischen Staatsmodell Irans? Welche Rolle spielt der Wächterrat, und wie ist es um die religiösen Minderheiten bestellt?

Diese und weitere Fragen über das iranische Atomprogramm und über eine mögliche Einigung der USA oder EU mit Iran werden in der Diskussionsrunde ebenfalls behandelt. Dazu gehörte auch die Fragestellung, wieso es in den letzten Jahren – trotz der Präsidentschaft des gemäßigten Barack Obama – nicht zu einer Annäherung kam? Und zu guter Letzt bleibt die Frage nach dem Zinsverbot in der iranischen Wirtschaft.

Der Vortrag und die facettenreichen Diskussion wurden am 21. Oktober 2013 in der Hauptstadt Berlin abgehalten.

Das passt natürlich 100% ins Bild des „schwulenhassenden“ russischen Präsidenten Putin. Schaut man sich jedoch die Geschichte ein wenig näher an, wird klar, dass die deutschen Zeitungen einmal mehr die Wahrheit verdrehen, um Russland in einem möglichst düsteren Licht darzustellen

Pawel Lebedew wurde von den Sicherheitskräften nicht abgeführt, weil er homosexuell ist oder eine Regenbogenfahne bei sich hatte, sondern weil er die Absperrungen übertreten hatte und den Fackellauf aktiv gestört hat.

In einer solchen Situation hätten die Sicherheitsbehörden in jedem Land der Welt vergleichbar gehandelt. Ganz konkret bietet sich hier ein Vergleich mit den Protesten während des Fackellaufs zu den Olympischen Spielen 2008 in Peking an, die in den westlichen Metropolen Paris und London stattgefunden haben. In beiden Städten wurde der Fackellauf von Exil-Tibetern als Rahmen für ihre Proteste genutzt. Sowohl in Paris als auch in London gingen die Sicherheitskräfte mit aller gebotenen Härte gegen die Demonstranten vor – in London wurden dabei 37 Demonstranten niedergeknüppelt und anschließend in Polizeigewahrsam genommen.

In der Ukraine, in Moldawien, in Russland, in Weißrussland, in Rumänien und in anderen Staaten Mittel- und Osteuropas versuchen bezahlte Agitatoren und Provokateure ohne Unterlass „farbige Revolutionen“ zu inszenieren. Jetzt ist Kiew dran  die Ukraine soll von Russland weg in die EU und in die NATO.

Chef der „Orangenen Revolution II“ ist Vitali Klitschko und der rechte Nationalist Oleh Tyahnybok. Die Revo- Drehbücher stammen aber nicht aus Kiew, sondern aus London, Washington und New York.

Vor kurzem noch drohte Victoria Nuland, Unterstaatssekretärin des US-Aussenministers Kerrys und für europäische und eurasische Angelegenheiten zuständig der ukrainischen Regierung Sanktionen an. Un der republikanische US-Senator John McCain aus Arizona war auch bei den Demonstranten in Kiew.
Frau Nuland hat auf dem Maidan Square Brötchen an Protestierende verteilt. Auch EU-Parlamentarier hielten während der Proteste noch vor Wochen in Kiew Reden vor Demonstranten.

That’s according to Oxfam’s latest report on the risks of the widening gap between the super-rich and the poor.

The report, titled “Working for the Few,” was released Monday, and was compiled by Oxfam – an international organization looking for solutions against poverty and injustice.

The document focuses on the extent of global economic inequality caused by rapidly increasing wealth of the richest people that poses the threat to the “human progress.”

A total of 210 people became billionaires last year, joining the existing 1,426 billionaires with a combined net worth of $5.4 trillion.

„Instead of moving forward together, people are increasingly separated by economic and political power, inevitably heightening social tensions and increasing the risk of societal breakdown,“ the report stated.

Also, according to the Oxfam data, the richest 1 percent of people across the globe have $110 trillion, or 65 times the total wealth of the bottom half of the planet’s population – which effectively “presents significant threat to inclusive political and economic systems.”

“It is staggering that, in the 21st century, half of the world’s population — that’s three and a half billion people — own no more than a tiny elite whose numbers could all fit comfortably on a double-decker bus,” Oxfam chief executive Winnie Byanyima told a news conference.

And the number of the rich is steadily growing: for example, in India the number of billionaires skyrocketed from six to 61 in the past 10 years, and their combined net worth is currently $250 billion.

The report comes ahead of the World Economic Forum in Davos which begins later this week, and urges the world leaders to discuss how to tackle this pressing issue.

Among the solutions presented by Oxfam are measures to avoid tax dodging and using economic wealth to pressure governments, looking for political benefits. Also, the organization calls for “making public all the investments in companies and trusts for which they are the ultimate beneficial owners,” as well as “challenging governments to use tax revenue to provide universal healthcare, education and social protection for citizens.”

Oxfam also said that there are many laws that favor the rich, which were lobbied for in a “power grab” by the world’s wealthiest people.

Since the late 1970s, tax rates for the richest have fallen in 29 out of 30 countries for which data are available, according to Oxfam.

„A survey in six countries (the US, UK, Spain, Brazil, India and South Africa) showed that a majority of people believe that laws are skewed in favor of the rich,“ the report said.

Zwei US-Forscher legen Studie zum Chemiewaffenangriff vom 21. August 2013 bei Damaskus vor: Washingtons Darstellung ist falsch
Bereits am Dienstag vergangener Woche legten zwei US-Forscher einen Untersuchungsbericht zum Chemiewaffenangriff im syrischen Ghuta bei Damaskus im August 2013 vor. In westlichen Ländern berichteten darüber nur wenige Medien, obwohl die Studie zu dem Schluß kommt: Die Giftgasmunition konnte nicht aus den Gebieten, die von syrischen Regierungstruppen kontrolliert wurden, abgefeuert worden sein.

Autoren der 23seitigen Analyse sind Richard Lloyd, ein früherer UN-Waffeninspekteur, und Theodore Postol, Professor am Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Unter dem Titel »Mögliche Auswirkungen falscher technischer US-Aufklärung« legen sie ihre Ergebnisse der Überprüfung jener Raketen vor, mit denen nach Erkenntnis von UN-Waffeninspekteuren am 21. August vergangenen Jahres Sarin in mehrere Ortschaften in der Region Ghuta geschossen worden war.

Lloyd und Postol fassen die Resultate, zu denen sie gelangten, so zusammen: »– Die syrischen unkonventionellen Chemiewaffenträger, die beim Nervengasangriff vom 21. August in Damaskus benutzt wurden, hatten eine Reichweite von rund zwei Kilometern.

– Die unabhängige Bewertung der Reichweite der Chemiewaffenträger durch die Vereinten Nationen steht in genauer Übereinstimmung mit unseren Befunden.

– Das besagt, daß diese Geräte nicht vom ›Herz‹ oder dem östlichen Rand des von der syrischen Regierung kontrollierten Gebietes, wie es auf einer Geheimdienstkarte, die vom Weißen Haus am 30. August 2013 veröffentlicht wurde, dargestellt war, nach Ostghuta abgefeuert werden konnten.

– Diese falsche Geheimdienstinformation hätte zu einer ungerechtfertigten US-Militäraktion führen können (…).

– Eine genaue Überprüfung der Tatsache, daß die Trägerwaffen solch geringe Reichweite hatten, hätte zu einer komplett anderen Bewertung der Situation auf Grundlage der gesammelten Daten geführt.

– Welche Gründe auch immer zu den ungeheuerlichen Fehlern (errors) in den Geheimdienstinformationen führten – die Quelle dieser Fehler muß aufgeklärt werden.

– Wenn die Quelle dieser Fehler nicht identifiziert wird, werden die Vorgänge, die zu diesem Versagen der Geheimdienste geführt haben, unkorrigiert bleiben, und die Möglichkeiten für ein zukünftiges Politikdesaster werden mit Bestimmheit wachsen.«

Gegenüber der US-Webseite http://www.mcclatchydc.com erklärte Postol am vergangenen Mittwoch, er selbst sei zu Beginn der Untersuchung davon ausgegangen, daß nur die syrische Regierung hinter dem Chemiewaffenangriff stecken konnte: »Aber jetzt bin ich mir keiner Sache mehr sicher. Die Geschichte der Administration ist nicht einmal nahe an der Wahrheit.« Lloyd wird mit den Worten zitiert: »Die syrischen Rebellen haben sehr wahrscheinlich die Fähigkeit, solche Waffen herzustellen. Ich denke, sie könnten dazu eher fähig sein als die syrische Regierung.«

Der Giftgasangriff in Ghuta kostete nach unterschiedlichen Berichten zwischen 280 und bis zu 1700 Menschen das Leben. Die USA und ihre Verbündeten machten die syrische Regierung verantwortlich und drohten mit einem Luftkrieg. Er konnte in letzter Minute abgewendet werden. Anfang Dezember hatte der US-Journalist Seymour Hersh berichtet, die US-Regierung habe Informationen über Giftgasvorräte in den Händen der bewaffneten syrischen Gruppen manipuliert (siehe jW vom 10. Dezember 2013).

Iraq-Linked Group Claims Responsibility for Volgograd Attacks

OSCOW, January 20 (RIA Novosti) – An Islamist terrorist group with roots in Iraq has claimed responsibility for suicide bombings last month in Russia’s southern city of Volgograd and threatened more attacks during the Winter Olympics in Sochi.

In a video posted on YouTube, two Russian-speaking men, identified only as Suleiman and Abdurakhman, claim to be members of the Jamaat Ansar al-Sunnah Wahabbi militant group reportedly based in Iraq.

Two suicide bombings killed 34 and injured many others late December in separate attacks on a train station and on a trolleybus. Tha attacks prompted a tightening of security measures ahead of the Games, which are due to open on February 7.

The 49-minute video appears to show preparations for the attacks, including explosives being strapped to people’s bodies. The faces of the people to whom the bombs are being strapped are not shown in the footage, but introductory text states Suleiman and Abdurakhman carried out the attacks.

Nobody has to date claimed responsible for the explosions in Volgograd.

The video was originally released online Saturday, and surfaced by Sunday on a website that generally serves as a mouthpiece of North Caucasus militant groups seeking to establish an independent Islamic state.

One of the men in the video said the bombings were a response to the Russia authorities’ actions in the North Caucasus and threatened more attacks, including some targeting the Olympics.

Earlier in July, the Chechen leader of the Caucasus Emirate, Doku Umarov, had ordered attacks on the Olympics. Last week, the Kremlin-backed leader of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, claimed he had evidence that Umarov had died recently.

In response to the terrorist attacks, Russia has introduced unprecedented security measures for the Games.

Islamist fighters, once confined largely to Chechnya, have spread across the North Caucasus in recent years, and are frequently linked to the attacks on security forces, police and civilians.

Syria – Arrested militants confess to direct Saudi links

Members of the al-Qaeda-linked militant group the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) have confessed to having direct links with Saudi Arabia.

Iraqi channel Afaq TV on Friday aired confessions of a number of the ISIL militants admitting to having relations with and taking orders from Riyadh.

In the broadcast, the members of the militant group also confessed to Saudi Arabia’s role in terrorist attacks in a number of Iraqi provinces, along with transporting weapons and booby-trapped cars into Iraqi cities.

One of the captured ISIL leaders said a Saudi military official ordered him to carry out several attacks.

Iraqi Federal Intelligence and Investigations Directorate in Karbala has arrested a large number of terrorists in several operations it has carried out recently.

The revelation comes as the Iraqi army and Sunni tribesmen continue their battle to drive out ISIL militants in the western province of Anbar.

Iraq is experiencing its worst cycle of violence since 2008, with al-Qaeda-linked militants flexing their muscles on Baghdad’s doorstep.

Earlier in January, Iraqi security officials said a senior ISIL commander, identified as Shaker Vahib al-Fahdavi, had met with a top Saudi intelligence official in Anbar, just weeks before he was killed by Iraqi forces.

An unnamed al-Qaeda commander recently arrested by Iraqi forces also said that the ISIL has received USD 150 million and 60 vehicles in aid from Saudi Arabia one day before an anti-government camp was dismantled by Iraqi forces in Ramadi last month.

The removal of the camp, which Baghdad says was being used by terrorists operating in the country, sparked protests from Sunni lawmakers. But the army’s withdrawal from the city paved the way for ISIL militants to overrun the provincial capital and the neighboring city of Fallujah.
