the Snowden trove is really big. only 550 heavily redacted pages have been made available to the public from a trove exceeding 50,000 documents; most of us still have no clue about the scale of the surveillance problem or what we can do about it; resistance is confined mostly to professional civil liberties advocates; there is little indication that anything will change soon if ever;  there seems to have been little disruption to overall system functioning though certainly some people in the NSA are nervous;  everyone has had a lengthy lesson in proper, system-friendly, whistleblowing; the more avid followers of this story and its meta-narrative seem dumber and weirder than they were before; and the Leak Keepers are richer and more influential.

Ishiba cuts ‚terrorism‘ from civic demos comment
The secretary general of Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party has deleted part of a comment on his blog that equated extremely noisy demonstrations with terrorism.

Shigeru Ishiba has come under fire after posting a comment on Friday that said the tactic of screaming during protests is essentially not much different from an „act of terrorism.“

Ishiba was referring to demonstrations by civic groups opposing a controversial government bill to toughen penalties for leakers of state secrets. The bill passed the Lower House last week and deliberations have now begun in the upper chamber.

Civic groups and others are continuing to stage rallies against the bill outside the Diet.

On Monday, Ishiba deleted his comparison to terrorism and wrote instead that protests with screaming are different from what democracy is meant to be.

He told reporters later in the day that peaceful rallies are to be welcomed in democratic societies. But he added that provoking fear among people and disturbing calm by shouting should be avoided, no matter what the issue.

– Bundesregierung befeuert die Demonstrationen des „pro-europäischen“ Protestbündnisses konservativer und extrem rechter Parteien in der Ukraine. Von den „Pro-Europa-Kundgebungen“ gehe eine „sehr klare Botschaft“ aus, erklärt ein Regierungssprecher in Berlin: Es sei „zu hoffen“, dass der ukrainische Staatspräsident „diese Botschaft wahrnimmt“. Gemeint ist die Unterzeichnung des EU-Assoziierungsabkommens, der Kiew sich vergangene Woche trotz massiven deutschen Drängens verweigert hat. Das „pro-europäische“ Bündnis in der Ukraine, auf das sich die Bundesrepublik schon seit Jahren stützt, um ihre Interessen in dem Land durchzusetzen, schließt nicht nur konservative Parteien, sondern auch Kräfte der extremen Rechten ein. Hintergrund ist deren Stärke vor allem in der Westukraine, die sich in dem Kult um einstige NS-Kollaborateure manifestiert. Im nationalistischen Milieu, das er prägt, ist derzeit insbesondere die Partei „Swoboda“ fest verankert. Ihr Anführer ruft in diesen Tagen in Kiew zu einer „Revolution“ auf.
