Some Reflections from our Recent Trip to Russia (By David and Jan Hartsough)

We have recently returned from a two week citizen’s diplomacy peace delegation to six cities in Russia under the auspices of the Center for Citizen Initiatives.

Our trip included visits with journalists, political leaders, teachers and students, doctors and medical clinics, veterans of past wars, representatives of small businesses and nongovernmental organizations, youth camps, and home visits.

Since David’s earlier visits to Russia over the past fifty-five years, much has changed. He was struck by how much new building and construction has taken place, and the “westernization” of clothing, styles, advertising, automobiles and traffic, as well as global corporations and private companies and stores.

Some of our reflections include:

1. Danger of US and NATO military exercises on Russian border, like a game of nuclear chicken. This could very easily escalate into nuclear war. We must wake up the American people about the danger and encourage our government to move away from this dangerous posturing.

2. We need to put ourselves in the Russians’ shoes. What if Russia had military troops, tanks and bomber planes and missiles on the US border in Canada and Mexico. Wouldn’t we feel threatened?

3. Russian people don’t want war and want to live in peace. The Soviet Union lost 27 million people in World War II because they were not prepared militarily. They will not let that happen again.   If attacked, they will fight for their Motherland. Most families lost family members in WWII, so war is very immediate and personal. In the siege of Leningrad between two and three million people perished.

4. US and NATO must take the initiative and show a commitment to living in peace with the Russians and treat them with respect.

5. The Russian people are a very friendly, open, generous and beautiful people. They are not a threat   They are proud to be Russians, and want to be seen as an important part of a multi-polar world.

6. Most people that we met were very supportive of Putin. After the break-up of the Soviet Union, they experienced the shock therapy of the neo-liberal model of privatizing everything. In the 1990’s there was tremendous poverty and suffering of the large majority of the people while the oligarchs stole the previously state-owned resources from the country. Putin has given leadership to pull the country together and help improve the lives and well-being of the people.   He is standing up to the bullies – the US and NATO – demanding respect from the rest of the world , and not allowing Russia to be pushed around and intimidated by the US.
7. Many Russians we talked with believe that the US is looking for enemies and creating wars in order to get more billions for the war profiteers.
8. The US must stop playing world policeman. It gets us in too much trouble and is not working. We need to give up our Pax Americana policies, acting like we are the most important country, the superpower which can tell the rest of the world how they can live and act.
9. My good Russian friend Voldya says “Don’t believe the propaganda of the political leaders and the corporate media.” The vilifying of Russia and Putin is what makes war possible. If we no longer see the Russians as people and human beings just like us, but make them the enemy, we can then support going to war with them.
10. The US and the European Union should stop the economic sanctions against Russia. They are hurting the Russian people and are counter-productive.
11. The people of Crimea, who are 70-80% Russian in nationality and language, voted in a referendum to become part of Russia as they had been for most of the past two hundred years. One Ukrainian nationality man living in Crimea, who opposed the referendum to join Russia, felt that at least 70% of the people in Crimea voted to join Russia. The people of Kosovo voted to secede from Serbia and the West supported them. The majority of people in Great Britain voted to leave the European Union; Scotland may vote to leave Great Britain.   People of every region or country have the right to determine their own future without interference of the rest of the world.
12. The US needs to stop meddling in other nation’s affairs and supporting the overthrow of their governments (regime change) – like Ukraine, Iraq, Libya and Syria. We are creating ever more enemies around the world, and getting ourselves involved in more and more wars. This is not creating security for Americans or anyone else.
13. We need to work for the common security of all peoples, not just one nation at the expense of other nations. National security does not work any more and current US policies cannot even create security in America.
14. Back in 1991 US Secretary of State Baker committed to Gorbachev that NATO would not move one foot eastward towards Russia’s borders in return for the Soviet Union allowing the reunification of Germany. The US and NATO have not kept that agreement and are now have battalions of military troops, tanks, military planes and missiles on Russia’s borders. Ukraine and Georgia may also join NATO, which gets Russia ever more worried about western intentions. When the Warsaw pact was disbanded, the NATO pact should have been disbanded as well.
15. The American people must organize to stop the US and NATO operations on Russia’s borders and stop meddling in Ukraine and Georgia. The future of these countries should be decided by the people of these countries, not by the US. We must resolve our conflicts by negotiations and peaceful means.  The future of billions of people on our beloved planet depends on what we do. An Urgent Appeal for a Joint Action
By the Peace and Antiwar Movement in the NY Metro Area

The drive by a nuclear-armed NATO to the borders of Russia — a nuclear-armed state — poses at the very least the risk of accidental nuclear war, and at worst the possibility of military confrontation between two nuclear powers.

On July 8-9 in Warsaw, Poland a NATO Summit will be held. Many fear it goes beyond saber-rattling to active war preparation. Its agenda is alarming. For example, the US wishes to incorporate Ukraine and Georgia into NATO. Next year, the Pentagon plans to quadruple military spending in Europe to $3.4 billion and begin rotating an armored brigade through Eastern Europe—in addition to extra NATO forces to be deployed to Poland and the Baltics. The US, the main force behind NATO, is also already in a deadly proxy war in eastern Ukraine.

NATO has already launched the largest war games in decades—involving 31,000 troops (14,000 from the US) and thousands of vehicles from 24 countries. The war games in Poland include air-ground assaults and electronic warfare scenarios. Airborne units, infantrymen, medics, military police and aviation units will operate jointly throughout the exercise, which culminates in a massive live-fire event led by the U.S. A naval exercise involving NATO forces has just begun in Finland.

A few weeks ago the United States activated the first of two missile-defense installations in Eastern Europe. The new missile defense site in Romania is a direct threat to regional security and inaugurates a new arms race. Earlier this year, it was disclosed that the U.S. was ramping up the deployment of heavy weapons and armored vehicles to NATO member countries in Central and Eastern Europe.

A separate missile defense base in Poland — a country with a new far-right government — is turning that country, according to one expert, into a U.S. bastion and potential launch platform against Russia in possible violation of existing agreements governing intermediate-range nuclear weapons. Meanwhile, there is the ongoing “SaberStrike” operation in Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.

Given the serious escalation of the danger of a disastrous confrontation between the United States and Russia, we must make our alarm at the upcoming NATO Summit known in a more public way.

To this end, we have organized a demonstration for Saturday July 9th to coincide with the NATO Summit in Warsaw Poland. Other actions are planned around the US and the world, particularly in Warsaw. We think it is important for the New York region to make its voice heard.

We consider the following general slogans to be a basis for unity:

• Yes to Peace; No to NATO!
•  Abolish NATO, Don’t Expand It!
• Money for Jobs, Not for NATO!
• No More War Games!
• End NATO Provocations Against Russia!

The demonstration will be held at 2 PM on Saturday July 9th, at the Army Recruiting Center in Times Square, Manhattan.

Kommunale Initiativen fordern Aufnahme von Flüchtlingen aus Griechenland (proasyl.de)

Mitte Juni hat der Osnabrücker Stadtrat einen Antrag beschlossen, der fünfzig Flüchtlinge aus Griechenland direkt nach Osnabrück bringen soll. Die Initiative »50 aus Idomeni« hatte vorher über 1.400 Unterschriften für das Vorhaben gesammelt.
Dr. Renate Vestner-Heiser von der Initiative »50 aus Idomeni« übergibt die gesammelten Unterschriften an den Osnabrücker Oberbürgermeister.

Das ist nur eine von vielen Initiativen, die kommunal das bewerkstelligen wollen, was die Politik auf Bundesebene nicht schafft: Die schnelle Aufnahme von Schutzbedürftigen aus Griechenland. Auch in Wuppertal, Mannheim, Essen oder im Wendland fordern Bürger*innen ihre Kommunen dazu auf, Flüchtlinge direkt aus anderen Ländern aufzunehmen.

Grund dafür ist auch: Die groß angekündigten europäischen Relocation-Programme funktionieren nicht. Weder aus der Türkei, noch aus Griechenland oder Italien werden Flüchtlinge in nennenswerter Zahl auf andere EU-Länder verteilt. Die allermeisten Schutzsuchenden sitzen dort weiter unter erbärmlichen Bedingungen fest.

Wir alle wissen sehr wenig, was in Libyen passiert. Wir stellen allerdings fest, dass im Unterschied zu 2015 nicht mehr Einzelfahrzeuge die Küste verlassen, sondern gleich ganze Geschwader. Es werden an Land offenbar einige tausend Flüchtlinge zusammengeholt und auf 20 oder mehr Boote verteilt, die zugleich in See stechen. Vergangene Woche haben wir in unserem Umkreis einmal zwei Dutzend dieser Boote zugleich gezählt!

Bernie Sanders still “a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.”

Sanders, in an article headlined “Democrats Have to Wake Up,” identified himself at the end of the article as “a candidate for the Democratic presidential nomination.”

The message is clear: Sanders is still in the race for the Democratic nomination.

“We need a president who will vigorously support international cooperation that brings the people of the world closer together, reduces hypernationalism and decreases the possibility of war. We also need a president who respects the democratic rights of the people, and who will fight for an economy that protects the interests of working people, not just Wall Street, the drug companies and other powerful special interests.

“We need to fundamentally reject our “free trade” policies and move to fair trade. Americans should not have to compete against workers in low-wage countries who earn pennies an hour. We must defeat the Trans-Pacific Partnership. We must help poor countries develop sustainable economic models.

“We need to end the international scandal in which large corporations and the wealthy avoid paying trillions of dollars in taxes to their national governments.

“We need to create tens of millions of jobs worldwide by combating global climate change and by transforming the world’s energy system away from fossil fuels.

“We need international efforts to cut military spending around the globe and address the causes of war: poverty, hatred, hopelessness and ignorance.”

Former US drone technicians speak out against programme in Brussels (Guardian)

Two whistleblowers on the US drone programme have joined campaigners in Brussels ahead of a European parliament hearing on the use of armed drones.

Former military technicians Cian Westmoreland and Lisa Ling both worked on the high-tech infrastructure on which the drones flying in Afghanistan rely. They have now come forward as critics of the US drone programme.

Anführer der Attentate von Istanbul: EU verhinderte 2010 dessen Auslieferung nach Russland (RTdeutsch)

Erste Ermittlungen zum Anschlag auf den Atatürk-Flughafen in Istanbul haben ergeben, dass der mutmaßliche führende Kopf hinter dem Anschlag ein Tschetschene namens Ahmet Tschataew ist. Vor seiner Mitgliedschaft beim „Islamischen Staat“ soll ihm Österreich Asyl gewährt haben. Dieser Status verhinderte, dass der „Terror-Mastermind“ an russische Strafverfolgungsbehörden ausgeliefert wurde, die ihn bereits seit 2003 wegen Terrorismus zur Fahndung ausgeschrieben hatten.

Den tragischen Bombenanschlag auf dem Istanbuler Atatürk-Flughafen, bei dem 44 Menschen starben und 230 verletzt wurden, organisierte mutmaßlich ein russischer Staatsbürger tschetschenischer Herkunft, Ahmet Tschataew. 2015 schloss dieser sich dem IS an und kämpft heute immer noch in Syrien, berichten türkische Medien unter Berufung auf Polizei-Quellen.

Tschataew stieg in den Rängen des IS auf und wurde beauftragt, Kämpfer zu trainieren, um diese dann für Angriffe auf den Westen und Russland einzusetzen. Dem Sicherheitsrat der Vereinten Nationen zufolge stehen 130 Kämpfer unter seinem Befehl. Seine Kämpfer seien mehrheitlich „Immigranten aus dem Nordkaukasus“, berichtete die russische Zeitung Kommersant bereits Anfang des Jahres.

Wie Ermittlungen ergaben, wird der Tschetschene seit Längerem auch von russischen Strafverfolgungsbehörden wegen terroristischer Aktivitäten gesucht. Er floh zunächst nach Europa, wo ihm Asyl gewährt wurde. Eine Auslieferung an Russland war damit unmöglich geworden.

Tschataew schloss sich im zweiten Tschetschenienkrieg zwischen 1999 und 2000 seinen „Glaubensbrüdern“ im Nordkaukasus an. Der Kämpfer verlor dabei in Kämpfen seinen rechten Arm. Später war er russischen Medien zufolge der Stellvertreter von Doku Umarow in Westeuropa. Umarow war der Anführer des im Nordkaukasus aktiven, al-Qaida-nahen „Kaukasischen Emirats“. Heute wird er von seinen Gefolgsleuten auch „der Einarmige“ genannt, schrieb The Daily Mail. Seinen Asylaufenthalt bekam er gewährt, weil er in Österreich angab, sein Arm wäre ihm im russischen Gefängnis abgeschlagen worden.

Der mutmaßliche Kopf hinter dem Anschlag in Istanbul steht in Russland seit 2003 auf der Fahndungsliste. Im gleichen Jahr erhielt er einen Flüchtlingsstatus in Österreich. Demnach unterstützt er seit Jahren den Terrorismus und bildet Kämpfer aus.

2008 haben ihn schwedische Behörden gemeinsam mit anderen Tschetschenen in der Stadt Trelleborg festgenommen. Die Polizei fand in seinem Auto Kalaschnikow-Sturmgewehre, Bomben und Munition. Er verbrachte mehr als ein Jahr in einem schwedischen Gefängnis.

2010 wurde Tschataew in der Ukraine festgesetzt. Die Sicherheitsbehörden entdeckten brisantes Videomaterial auf seinem Handy, das Techniken für terroristische Aktivitäten dokumentiert, heißt es. Russland erbat seine Auslieferung. Der europäische Gerichtshof für Menschenrechte drängte Kiew, davon Abstand zu nehmen. Die Menschenrechtsorganisation Amnesty International blies ins gleiche Horn. Sie warnte, Tschataew „könnte vor einem unfairen Verfahren stehen und gefoltert werden“.

Deutsche Think-Tanks eskalieren Konfrontation mit Russland (German Foreign Policy)

Wenige Tage vor dem NATO-Gipfel in der polnischen Hauptstadt Warschau fordern deutsche Think-Tanks neben der Stationierung von Kampftruppen an der Grenze zu Russland den Ausbau des westlichen Atomwaffenarsenals. Eine „Überarbeitung“ der „Nuklearstrategie“ der NATO sei „dringend geboten“, da eine gegen Moskau gerichtete „glaubwürdige Abschreckung“ zwingend einer „nuklearen Komponente“ bedürfe, erklärt etwa die CDU-nahe Konrad-Adenauer-Stiftung. Auch die zentrale militärpolitische Denkfabrik der Bundesregierung, die Bundesakademie für Sicherheitspolitik (BAKS), verlangt nach einem „neuen nuklearstrategischen Konsens“ des transatlantischen Bündnisses, um die „anti-westliche Macht“ Russland in Schach zu halten. Die Implementierung eines Raketenabwehrsystems in den osteuropäischen NATO-Staaten wird ebenfalls mit der vermeintlichen „Aggressivität“ Moskaus und der davon abgeleiteten Notwendigkeit der „Abschreckung“ begründet. Ihre „politische Handlungsfähigkeit“ gegenüber Russland stelle die westliche Militärallianz zudem dadurch unter Beweis, dass die formal neutralen Staaten Schweden und Finnland bereits „eng in die NATO-Prozesse integriert“ seien, heißt es. Darüber hinaus bekennen sich beide Think-Tanks zum gewaltförmigen „globalen Krisenmanagement“. Der Adenauer-Stiftung zufolge muss die NATO in der Lage sein, „Bedrohungen“ überall „dort auszuschalten, wo sie entstehen“. Als solche gelten der Denkfabrik explizit auch „Migrationsströme“.

„Wir haben viele Probleme mit den Russen, aber in den Bereichen, die im Interesse unserer nationalen Sicherheit liegen, müssen wir mit ihnen so effektiv wie möglich zusammenarbeiten.
