The first Los Angeles International Uranium Film Festival – a film festival about nucler power risks – in the planning.
From Quebec and to Berlin with New Films Nuclear Power Risks / Uranium Film Festival could also come to California
Rio de Janeiro, Berlin – Independent films and nuclear awareness: The Brazilian born International Uranium Film Festival is a global festival dedicated to films about all aspects of nuclear power like uranium mining, nuclear power plants, atomic bombs, radioactive accidents, uranium weapons and atomic waste. The festival started this year in April in Quebec City and Montreal with support from the Quebec Cree Nation. Now the Uranium Film Festival comes in September for the fourth time to Berlin. From September 24 to 30 the festival will screen in Berlin dozens of nuclear films from all over the world like Australia, India, Italy, Germany, Iran, France, Denmark, Ukraine, USA and Tadshikistan.
„Those who do not remember the past are condemned to repeat it (George Santayana).“ The challenges of the Uranium Film Festival are to bring important films about the nuclear question to the big screen, to stimulate the production of new nuclear films and to stimulate the public discussion about use and risks of nuclear power. The horror of atomic bombs and those who suffered from them, and nuclear accidents like Chernobyl or Fukushima should never be forgotten – nor repeated.
Since 2011 the International Uranium Film Festival (in Portuguese Urânio Em Moviemento) is held every year in Rio de Janeiro’s Modern Art Museum Cinema (MAM Rio). In addition the festival travels with a selection of its nuclear films to other countries and cities. The festival has been already for example in New York City, Washington DC, Santa Fe, Window Rock, Lisbon, São Paulo, in New Delhi and Mumbai, in Quebec and Montreal, in Munich and 3 times in Berlin. After Berlin the organizers plan to bring the Uranium Film Festival for the first time to LA in California and to Rome in Italy.
The legal organizer of the Festival is the non-profit arts and cultural organization “Arquivo Amarelo“ (Yellow Archives) based in Rio de Janeiro and registered as Brazilian charity. The festival depends on individual donors and sponsors.
