[Mainichi] Editorial: Reflect local opposition to Futenma relocation in national policy

This year marks the 69th anniversary of the end of World War II, and the 42th anniversary of Okinawa‘ reversion to Japan. Okinawa experienced ground fighting during the Pacific War, was placed under U.S. military administration after the war, and has suffered a high concentration of U.S. military bases even after it reverted back to Japan. A change in thinking — one that does not depend on forcing bases on Okinawa in exchange for economic advancement measures — is crucial. Unless we come up with a plan that can gain the understanding and acceptance of the Okinawan people, the Japan-U.S. security arrangement will not be sustainable.
