Wieder ein massiver „postdemokratischer“ Angriff auf unsere Werte und unsere Freiheit, der wir entschlossen entgegentreten müssen. „TAFTA – die große Unterwerfung“ heißt der Artikel. Autor ist Lori Wallach, der die weltweit größte Verbraucherschutzorganisation leitet. Es geht um das transatlantische Handels- und Investitionsabkommen, eine Art „Wirtschaftsnato“, die eine transatlantische Freihandelszone begründen will. Die Verhandlungen über dieses TTIP-TAFTA-Projekt finden hinter verschlossenen Türen statt, damit niemand beizeiten mitbekommt, was tatsächlich auf dem Spiel steht.

Für diese Heimlichtuerei gibt es einen einfachen Grund: Ein solches Abkommen würde die nationalen Regierungen bis hinunter zu den Kommunalverwaltungen verpflichten, ihre aktuelle und künftige Innenpolitik dem umfangreichen Regelwerk anzupassen.

It is time to state the obvious: Arafat was killed. And suspicion falls squarely on Israel.

Israel alone had the means, track record, stated intention and motive. Without Israel’s fingerprints on the murder weapon, it may not be quite enough to secure a conviction in a court of law, but it should be evidence enough to convict Israel in the court of world opinion.

Israel had access to polonium from its nuclear reactor in Dimona, and it has a long record of carrying out political assassinations, some ostentatious and others covert, often using hard-to-trace chemical agents. Most notoriously, Israel tried to quietly kill another Palestinian leader, Khaled Meshal of Hamas, in Jordan in 1997, injecting a poison into his ear. Meshal was saved only because the assassins were caught and Israel was forced to supply an antidote. Israeli leaders have been queuing up to deny there was ever any malign intent from Israel’s side towards Arafat. Silvan Shalom, the energy minister, claimed last week: “We never made a decision to harm him physically.” Shalom must be suffering from a memory lapse.

There is plenty of evidence that Israel wanted Arafat – in the euphemism of that time – “removed”. In January 2002, Shaul Mofaz, Israel’s military chief of staff, was caught on a microphone whispering to Israel’s prime minister, Ariel Sharon, about Arafat: “We have to get rid of him.”

With the Palestinian leader holed up for more than two years in his battered compound in Ramallah, surrounded by Israeli tanks, the debate in the Israel government centred on whether he should be exiled or killed.

In September 2003, when Shalom was foreign minister, the cabinet even issued a warning that Israel would “remove this obstacle in a manner, and at a time, of its choosing.” The then-deputy prime minister, Ehud Olmert, clarified that killing Arafat was “one of the options”.

The 2013 International Uranium Film Festival comes to the Navajo Nation – December 2-4

ATOMIC FILMS TRAVELING FROM RIO DE JANEIRO TO THE NAVAJO NATION REVIVING DINÉ SOLIDARITY AGAINST URANIUM INDUSTRY

Window Rock, AZ – December 2-4, 2013, the International Uranium Film Festival (IUFF) will be held in the homelands of indigenous communities sacrificed by the United States to produce uranium for the bombs of World War II and the Cold War. Although the Navajo Nation has a moratorium halting new uranium production, there are nearby uranium mining and milling facilities and local transport of radioactive materials happening today and more being proposed as the push for nuclear energy development continues, despite the dangers exemplified by Churchrock and Chernobyl.

The two and a half days of the event are free and open to the public for the purpose of: Art and Awareness. The IUFF will highlight over 40 films from 15 countries, which explore not only the radioactive element “uranium”, but also the nuclear industry and resulting effects on local communities as well. These are documentaries, fiction, science fiction, comedies, experimental and animated films.

Since 20ll, this is the third IUFF to premiere in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil and then travel the globe. The IUFF is the world’s only traveling film festival devoted to the entire Nuclear Fuel Chain, from uranium mining to uranium tailings and nuclear waste, from Hiroshima to Fukushima and Fallujah.

The festival will make its way from Albuquerque (Nov. 27-28) to Santa Fe (Nov. 30-Dec. 1), to Window Rock and finally to Washington D.C. and New York City in early 2014. The founder of the IUFF, Norbert G. Suchanek of Germany, will be present at each screening along with Executive Director Marcia Gomes de Oliveira of Brazil and various producers and directors of the films. Each screening is organized by a diverse group of volunteers to bring these films to the wide screen.

Because of the tremendous impact uranium mining has had on Diné peoples, while these films are playing in the theatre of the Navajo Nation Museum, there will be several organizations coming together on the side to dialogue about the uranium legacy issues still plaguing the Navajo Nation and the new uranium mining permit applications threatening nearby communities and Sacred Sites. Community groups, residents and allies will meet for the two and a half days at the museum and in the local area. Online video streaming will be available via ustream.com during selected hours of the event.

Native t-shirt silk-screen printers will be on site for those who want to purchase or print souvenir tees to commemorate this special event, taking place exactly seven years after the historical Indigenous World Uranium Summit that was held in the same location in 2006.

Last week we discovered that G4S’s contract to run immigration removal centres will be expanded, even though all further business with the state was supposed to be frozen while allegations of fraud were investigated.
